Some people think of marketing as going to the grocery store, or hauling a load of wheat to the elevator - simple buying or selling. Kelly defines is as figuring out how to sell what you've got, which is another popular definition, and <i>helping the customer buy</i> instead of shoving something down their throats is more profitable in the long run. The definition <i>I</i> prefer, though is figuring out what customers want (even if they don't know it yet) and changing your products and services to match. Combine that definition of marketing with Kelly's definition of marketing, and you could end up with a really profitable business.
