Marketing means so many things to different people, and the conflicting definitions make it a less than useful term.

Some people think of marketing as going to the grocery store, or hauling a load of wheat to the elevator - simple buying or selling.

Kelly defines is as figuring out how to sell what you've got, which is another popular definition, and helping the customer buy instead of shoving something down their throats is more profitable in the long run.

The definition I prefer, though is figuring out what customers want (even if they don't know it yet) and changing your products and services to match. Combine that definition of marketing with Kelly's definition of marketing, and you could end up with a really profitable business.

And I hope I win.

Harl: I just have to say that this might be one of the most insightful giveaway entries to date -- I love your take on marketing and what it means for the customers, for the business, for people personally. Really appreciate your input, though sorry to say it doesn't have an effect the outcome ;) - Susan
